We’re often asked how we manage to travel so frequently and explore all the hidden corners of the US. One of our favorite travel tools is the Capital One Venture Card.
It’s simple: every dollar we spend earns unlimited 2x miles that we can redeem for any travel expense — from cabin rentals in Wears Valley to flights into Knoxville. It’s the card we use daily to turn our regular spending into future travel adventures.
If you’re planning your next trip, consider signing up. You can earn a 75,000-mile bonus (equal to $750 in travel) after meeting the initial spending goal. Plus a one-time $250 travel credit in the first year.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE SMOKIES
⚠️ Insider Alert: Late-Winter Sweet Spot (Before Spring Break Hits)
This weekend is one of those underrated Smokies windows — quieter than peak season, but busy enough that you’ll still want a strategy. Expect steady traffic in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge mid-day, especially if the weather cooperates.
Here’s your insider move: get into Great Smoky Mountains National Park early (before 9 AM) or later in the afternoon. Midday is when parking lots at Laurel Falls and Newfound Gap fill up. If you hit a full lot, pivot quickly — Greenbrier and the Cosby entrance are often calmer alternatives.
🌤️ Late February can mean crisp sunshine in town and icy patches at higher elevations. Before driving toward Newfound Gap or Clingmans Dome, check road conditions on the National Park Service website.
Insider tip: If upper elevations are closed, lower-elevation hikes along the Little River or in Townsend are usually your safest bet — and often just as scenic this time of year.
❄️ Last Call for Snow Fun
If the skies are clear and the roads are safe, the Smokies offer some incredible late-winter experiences.
If you’re hoping to squeeze in some winter activities, this is likely one of the final reliable weekends at Ober Mountain. Snow quality depends entirely on temperature swings, so check slope and tubing conditions before heading up. Morning visits typically offer the best experience.

INSIDER SECRETS
The Easiest Way to Beat Traffic in Pigeon Forge (That Most Visitors Ignore)
If you’ve ever sat bumper-to-bumper on the Parkway, watching the same mini-golf course for 20 minutes, you know how quickly Smoky Mountain traffic can eat into your vacation.
Most visitors make the same mistake: they drive the Parkway end to end for every single stop. From The Island to Dollywood to dinner and back again — all on the main strip. When traffic builds (and it will), everything slows to a crawl.
Here’s the insider move: Use the back roads locals rely on.
Teaster Lane runs parallel to the Parkway and connects many of the busiest areas without the stoplight chaos. Veterans Boulevard is another quiet bypass that can save serious time. And if you're heading toward Gatlinburg, consider taking Veterans to Dollywood Lane or using traffic light numbers (posted along the Parkway) to navigate more efficiently.
Before you leave your cabin or hotel, plug your destination into Google Maps and toggle the traffic view. A two-minute check can save you 20 minutes of frustration. The families who know these shortcuts spend more time riding coasters and less time staring at brake lights.
LOCAL TIPS
If you’re visiting Dollywood on a Saturday, arrive 30-45 minutes before park opening. The first two hours are gold
Morning fog in the mountains usually burns off by late morning - don’t cancel scenic plans too early
If a parking lot looks full, drive one loop before giving up. Spots turn over quickly at many popular attractions
