ARE THE SMOKIES BECOMING TOO POPULAR?

Gatlinburg Parkway traffic, a Smokies parking tag and a full trailhead parking area

About 11.5 million people visited the Smokies in 2025, according to the National Park Service. That’s down from a record 14.2 million in 2021, but if you’ve ever sat in a Cades Cove traffic jam, you know it can still feel like a lot.

Add $5 parking tags, campground reservations and backcountry permits, and it’s a fair question: are the Smokies becoming too popular?

Our John Gullion has spent 36 years exploring these mountains. He breaks down the traffic, the fees and the permits, then shares the quieter roads and corners where you can still leave the crowds behind.

Too crowded, or still worth it? Hit reply and tell us. We read every one.

THOUGHTS FROM THE SMOKIES

INSIDER SECRETS

🐻 Lock It Up: Bears Are Opening Trucks

On Oct. 14, Gatlinburg resident Pam Conley filmed four black bears popping open a parked pickup in her driveway and helping themselves to granola bars, snacks and a six-pack of beer (via FOX Weather).

Funny on video, but it’s a real problem. Bears that get human food keep coming back for more.

🔥The insider move: lock your car every time, keep food, drinks and coolers out of sight, and never feed a bear.

Another Tip: Heading to the lights on opening weekend? The Smokies Fall Guide crowd forecast rates Gatlinburg “Heavy” on both Saturday and Sunday, with Saturday the busiest. For quieter color, it points to Wears Valley and Townsend.
