SEVIERVILLE RISING

Collage of downtown Sevierville: the Sevier County Courthouse lit up at night, the lobster statue at Pinchy's and a sunny downtown street

Not long ago, Sevierville was just the town you drove through to get to the fun stuff. Today you can spend a whole day in Sevier County and never make it to Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg.

Our John Gullion grew up here, and he explains what changed: a downtown food scene that may now be the best in East Tennessee, easier ways into town that skip the worst traffic, and a "back way" to Dollywood that has become the preferred way.

If you have only ever passed through, this one might change where you stay on your next trip.

THOUGHTS FROM THE SMOKIES

INSIDER SECRETS

🎄 Skip the Parkway on Christmas Opening Weekend

Heading to Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas this weekend? You don’t have to sit in Parkway traffic through Pigeon Forge to get there.

🔥The insider move: take Veterans Boulevard (TN-449) from Dolly Parton Parkway in Sevierville. It’s the back way to Dollywood that locals use, and it skips most of the Pigeon Forge traffic.

Another Tip: The sun sets around 5:35 p.m. this weekend, so the lights come on early. Grab dinner in Sevierville first, then head over.

LOCAL TIPS

  • Beat the chill and enjoy some indoor fun! This week is perfect for exploring the many museums, aquariums, and dinner shows in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. You’ll find plenty to do no matter the weather.

  • It gets dark very quickly in the mountains once the sun falls behind a ridge, so plan accordingly, especially if hiking.

  • Live or work in Blount, Cocke, Jefferson or Sevier County? Anakeesta’s $5 Local Appreciation Days run Nov. 6–13 (per Anakeesta).
