WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE SMOKIES

⚠️ Insider Alert: Dollywood Opens for the 2026 Season!

Dollywood reopens for an exciting new season starting March 13 for passhorlders, and then the general public on March 14th. Dolly Parton herself is planning her return on passholder’s day.

The park opens with its “I Will Always Love You Music Festival”. New this year is NightFlight Expedition. Word is the ride will be open in the spring, so get your season passes ready. Dollywood officials think the 2026 season could be one for the record books. We can’t wait to find out!

SEASONAL FUN IN THE SMOKIES

March in the Smokies is a transitional time when the crisp air of winter slowly gives way to hints of spring, making for truly unique outdoor experiences.

  • Free Entertainment: If you’re looking for something to entertain the kids, try the completely free Jurassic Adventures at The Island in Pigeon Forge. There are 22 animatronic dinosaurs to see. Plus, there is plenty of shopping and good food to explore.

  • Nature Hike: Take advantage of the clear, cooler days for a hike in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Trails like the Gatlinburg Trail or the Sugarlands Valley Nature Trail are excellent, relatively flat options that are often less crowded this time of year.

  • Spring is in the Air: Keep an eye out for early spring wildflowers! While it's still a bit early for a full bloom, hardy species might start to emerge in sheltered spots, adding a touch of color to the forest floor.

GUARANTEED GOOD TIMES (Rain or Shine)

Don't let the weather dictate your fun; the Smokies offer plenty of fantastic indoor and weather-proof options!

  • The Great Smoky Easter Arts and Crafts show at the Gatlinburg Convention Center continues through March 15th. Demonstrations are part of the event, and items are handcrafted and unique. Admission is FREE, but be prepared to purchase that special item.

  • Don’t forget to visit Anakeesta, which recently opened for the season. But be prepared for construction and minor inconveniences.

  • Dinner shows are always a great indoor choice. One of our favorites is the Pirates Dinner and Show. Guests are “swept away” to the islands of the South Pacific with dancing, a fire show, and so much more.

THOUGHTS FROM THE SMOKIES

INSIDER SECRETS

Unlocking the Best Views Without the Crowds

So many folks come to the Smokies eager to soak in those iconic mountain vistas, and who can blame them? But sometimes, the most popular overlooks, especially along Newfound Gap Road (US-441), can get a bit congested. My insider tip for truly breathtaking, less-trafficked views is to venture beyond the main park roads and explore lesser-known scenic drives. One of my personal favorites is the Foothills Parkway. While parts of it are still under construction or have been recently completed, the open sections offer absolutely stunning panoramic views of the Smoky Mountains, often without the bumper-to-bumper traffic you might find elsewhere.

The section between Walland and Wears Valley, for instance, provides incredible overlooks where you can pull over and just breathe in the beauty. Another fantastic option, if you're up for a bit more winding road, is the scenic drive along TN-73, also known as Wears Valley Road, especially as you head towards the Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area. While not as high in elevation as some spots, the road itself is picturesque, with several pullouts to enjoy the surrounding hills and valleys. These routes offer a different perspective and a more peaceful experience, allowing you to connect with the mountains in a way that feels a bit more personal and serene.

LOCAL TIPS

  • Beat the chill and enjoy some indoor fun! This week is perfect for exploring the many museums, aquariums, and dinner shows in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. You'll find plenty to do no matter the weather.

  • While the main road (US-441) through the national park is generally clear, some higher-elevation roads, like Newfound Gap Road or the Foothills Parkway, can still experience icy patches or temporary closures this time of year. Always check the National Park Service website for road conditions before heading out.

  • It gets dark very quickly in the mountains once the sun falls behind a ridge, so make sure you plan accordingly, especially if hiking.
