WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE SMOKIES
⚠️ Insider Alert: Newfound Gap Closure
Starting March 2nd, the Newfound Gap Road will close daily (Monday - Friday) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for necessary maintenance between Newfound Gap and Clingmans Dome. If you’re planning to drive this stretch, be sure to leave early or consider alternate routes like Little River Road or Cades Cove Loop during those hours. Weekend travelers can expect normal access.
Spring weather is starting to sneak in, but it’s still chilly at higher elevations, so pack layers if you’re heading up to Clingmans Dome or Mount LeConte. Also, the park has lifted all fire restrictions as of March 1, so campfires are allowed again in designated areas—just remember to use established fire rings and fully extinguish fires before leaving.
One lesser-known tip for this week: the wildflower season is gearing up, especially around the Oconaluftee area. The early blooms like trout lilies and spring beauties are popping up, so consider an easy hike on the Oconaluftee River Trail for a peaceful, colorful stroll away from the crowds.
Seasonal Fun in the Mountains
Spring is starting to wake up the Smokies this week, and there’s no better way to celebrate than at the Gatlinburg Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage, running March 5th through the 8th. Join guided hikes, workshops, and talks led by local naturalists who’ll help you spot early blooms like trillium, bloodroot, and hepatica. It’s a wonderful chance to learn about the park’s rich biodiversity right as the forest begins to green up.
Spring Heritage Festival: On March 6th, the small town of Townsend hosts its annual Spring Heritage Festival, a charming day filled with artisan crafts, live bluegrass music, and tasty local eats. The festival’s held in the Townsend Visitors Center and Meadow, making it an easy stop for a relaxed afternoon of mountain culture and community.
Trail Hiking: With the cooler mornings and mild afternoons this time of year, it’s perfect for hitting some of the higher-elevation trails like the Alum Cave Trail or Clingmans Dome. Both offer great early-spring views and fewer crowds than in summer. Don’t forget your layers—the weather can still surprise you this early in March!
Trout Tournament: Finally, mark your calendar for the March 7th Smoky Mountain Trout Tournament on the Little River near Elkmont. Whether you’re an experienced angler or a curious beginner, it’s a fun excuse to get outside, try your luck, and enjoy the peaceful river scenery just as the trout become more active with the warming waters.
Guaranteed Good Times (Rain, Snow, or Shine)
Don't let the fickle late-winter weather dictate your fun; the Smokies have plenty of fantastic indoor and weather-proof options to keep you entertained this week!
Quick Hikes: Looking for fun that’s always a sure bet this week? Start your Smoky Mountain adventure at Clingmans Dome, the highest point in the park. The paved trail to the observation tower is short but steep, perfect for a quick hike with panoramic views that stretch for miles — a real treat for solo explorers or couples wanting a memorable sunset. Just bundle up; March mornings can still surprise you with a chill!
Heritage Center: If the weather’s less than perfect, head over to the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center in Townsend. It’s a cozy spot where you can dive into local history and culture through interactive exhibits and beautiful Cherokee artifacts. Families will appreciate the hands-on activities that keep kids engaged while adults soak up stories of the region’s past.
Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery: For something a little different, check out the Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery in Gatlinburg. It’s fun for couples or friends curious about the craft of moonshine-making, with tastings that showcase authentic Appalachian flavors. The lively atmosphere and friendly guides make it a perfect way to warm up and unwind after a day on the trails or browsing downtown shops.

INSIDER SECRETS
Deep Creek Loop outside Bryson City
If you’re looking to escape the usual crowds, try the Deep Creek Loop just outside of Bryson City. Most folks stick to the main trails, but this loop winds through quiet streams and leads to three peaceful waterfalls where you can soak your feet without the usual crowd. Early morning is magic here—grab a coffee and head out before 9 a.m. for near solitude. Parking fills quickly later in the day, but if you arrive via the small lot at the Deep Creek Picnic Area rather than the main trailhead, you’ll save yourself a hike and snag a spot faster.
For a real local’s dining experience, skip the busy Gatlinburg strip and swing by a little spot called The Wild Plum in Townsend. It’s off the beaten path and serves up incredible Southern-style breakfasts and homemade pies that rarely make it onto menus elsewhere. Ask for the “hidden” cathead biscuits with apple butter—trust me, it’s a game changer. Also, if you’re heading to Clingmans Dome, try the back entrance from Newfound Gap Road after 4 p.m., when the main parking lot is packed. You’ll find a small pull-off that lets you beat the crowds and still enjoy the sunset views in peace.
LOCAL TIPS
Beat the chill and enjoy some indoor fun! This week is perfect for exploring the many museums, aquariums, and dinner shows in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. You'll find plenty to do no matter the weather.
If you’re aiming for popular trails like Alum Cave or Clingmans Dome, try to arrive before 9 a.m. on weekdays to beat the crowds and snag parking. Weekends tend to get busy by mid-morning, so plan accordingly. Remember, the park enforces strict Leave No Trace principles—pack out all trash, stay on marked trails, and keep pets leashed. Cell service can be spotty, so download maps or trail guides ahead of time to keep your adventure smooth and stress-free.
Cades Cove Loop is 11 miles and can take 2-4 hours with stops
