WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE SMOKIES
⚠️ Insider Alert: Youth Nights at Ober Mountain
Heads up, families and youth groups! This Wednesday, February 25th, Ober Mountain is hosting one of their popular Youth Nights from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. While these events are fantastic for younger visitors looking to enjoy the slopes and attractions, it's worth noting that the mountain will likely see increased attendance during these hours. If you're planning a visit to Ober Mountain specifically for a quieter experience or to avoid larger crowds, you might consider rescheduling for a different day.
However, if you have teens or pre-teens in your group, this is a prime opportunity for them to connect with other young people and enjoy the mountain's offerings in a lively, fun atmosphere designed just for them. It’s a great way for them to experience the excitement of Ober.
For those not attending Youth Night, remember that Ober Mountain still offers plenty of daytime activities, and you could always plan your visit for earlier in the day on Wednesday, or choose another day this week to enjoy the slopes, ice skating, or wildlife habitats with potentially fewer crowds.
Seasonal Fun in the Mountains
Late winter in the Smokies is a special time, as the landscape slowly transitions from frosty slumber to the vibrant greens of spring, offering unique outdoor experiences.
Bundle up and hit the trails! Many lower-elevation trails within Great Smoky Mountains National Park, like the Gatlinburg Trail or the Sugarlands Valley Nature Trail, are excellent for a brisk walk, often offering clearer views through the leafless trees and the chance to spot early spring wildflowers if the weather is mild.
Keep an eye out for wildlife. With less foliage, it can sometimes be easier to spot deer, turkeys, and even black bears (from a safe distance, of course!) foraging in the valleys as they begin to emerge more actively.
Unpredictable weather. February can still bring unpredictable weather, so check the forecast before heading out for a hike. Even at higher elevations, snow and ice can still be significant, making trails impassable or dangerous. Always be prepared for changing conditions, even if your plans are for lower altitudes.
Guaranteed Good Times (Rain, Snow, or Shine)
Don't let the fickle late-winter weather dictate your fun; the Smokies have plenty of fantastic indoor and weather-proof options to keep you entertained this week!

Unlocking the Quiet Side of Gatlinburg’s Arts & Crafts Community
While the main Parkway in Gatlinburg buzzes with excitement, many visitors miss out on one of the area's most authentic and charming experiences: the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community. This historic 8-mile loop, designated as a Tennessee Heritage Arts & Crafts Trail, is a treasure trove of local artisans, studios, and shops. Instead of just driving past the signs on Highway 321, I highly recommend dedicating a half-day or even a full day to exploring this unique area. You'll find everything from pottery and paintings to hand-carved wood and delicious homemade candies, all crafted by local residents. It’s a fantastic way to find truly unique souvenirs and gifts, and you often get to meet the artists themselves.
To make the most of your visit, start your loop from the Gatlinburg side, near traffic light #3 on the Parkway, and head onto US-321 North (also known as East Parkway). From there, you'll see signs directing you to the various studios and shops. Don't be afraid to pull off and explore the smaller lanes; some of the best finds are tucked away.
I always tell folks to grab a free map from the Gatlinburg Welcome Center or one of the larger shops in the community, as it highlights all the participating artisans. This allows you to plan your stops based on your interests, whether you're looking for a specific craft or just want to wander and discover. It's a much more relaxed pace than the Parkway, offering a peaceful glimpse into the heart of Appalachian artistry.
LOCAL TIPS
Beat the chill and enjoy some indoor fun! This week is perfect for exploring the many museums, aquariums, and dinner shows in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. You'll find plenty to do no matter the weather.
While the main road (US-441) through the national park is generally clear, some higher-elevation roads, like Newfound Gap Road or the Foothills Parkway, can still experience icy patches or temporary closures this time of year. Always check the National Park Service website for road conditions before heading out.
Cades Cove Loop is 11 miles and can take 2-4 hours with stops
