THOUGHTS FROM THE SMOKIES

INSIDER SECRETS

Black Bears in the Smokies

Black bears are active across the Smokies right now, and while spotting one can be exciting, it’s important to keep your distance. Bears may look calm or even curious, but they are wild animals and can become unpredictable—especially if they feel threatened or associate people with food.

The most important rule: never feed wildlife. Feeding bears (even accidentally by leaving food out) can cause them to lose their natural fear of humans, leading to dangerous encounters and, unfortunately, often results in the bear being relocated or euthanized. Keep food secured, dispose of trash properly, and give any wildlife plenty of space—you’ll help protect both yourself and the animals.

LOCAL TIPS

  • Visitor Safety: March had a surge in emergency incidents, including backcountry rescues. Visitors are urged to plan carefully, carry necessary gear, and stay within their limits while hiking. Note: Cell phone coverage is limited in backcountry areas.

  • Transportation Tip: Use the Pigeon Forge trolley system for easy, stress-free travel around town.
